Unions in America have been under attack for over 30 years. Legislative measures and media efforts have disrupted union progress and fueled anti-union sentiment. As a result, union membership is at the same level as was seen in the Great Depression. The evidence of weak union strength is prevalent when we look at the average wages of fast food workers, department store associates and most gas station attendants. Demographics suggest that seniors, workers under 18, and non-white employees are the most heavily employed by these establishments. Do we want to feel as though someone has our back?
When someone has our back, we are empowered to demand good working conditions and quality pay. When someone has our back, we can take care of our children and plan for their future. When someone has our back, we have the freedom to stand up for others and achieve true solidarity.
Automation’s rise in use has seen robots reap extra profit for investors that refuse to put money into new innovations, continue to hinder sound environmental policy, and do not look out for the everyday worker. These are some of the missed opportunities that have led to more poverty, less available meaningful work, and the overall decline in workplace morale.
Don’t be afraid to gather as the working class and have private conversations with each other. Make sure you reach a consensus/general understanding that the pay is not enough within the tier of employees. Don’t work for companies that strip the power from the worker. Can’t get your employer to raise your wage? Unions can help convince your employer that you aren’t playing around about your right to work in acceptable conditions.
Taxing the labor of robots ensures that labor costs saved by automation get translated into benefits for employees, not profits for the CEOs of conglomerates. However, embracing automation means there will be less total hours available for laborers. With less available hours we will need initiatives in place that effectively protect your rights against exploitation. Taxing technology will be essential to cover the cost of lost wages and employee benefits.
Tracking technological advancements, union leader accountability, and developing meaningful union connections are foundations for a strengthened union network. We are coming upon a complicated time in human history. With machines claiming jobs daily we need to focus our energy on changing the way we view labor in relation to a number of hours worked.
If you work together with you most likely hang out together and have somewhat of the same interests. By this token, you are then able to achieve comradery, solidarity, and lasting unity. Our job should always be to secure the future of generations to come.
